Contemplating Portraiture
Contemplating Portraiture
November 2021, Ritums Ivanovs opened an ambitious solo exhibition at Art Station "Dubulti" (Jurmala, Latvia), curated by Inga Šteimane. Its ten large-format portraits show Latvian female artists from different generations and ten charcoal drawings display self-portraits. All works are exhibited for the first time.
Portraiture has been in the center of Ritums Ivanovs painting for more than twenty years now and he is among those contemporary artists who focus on the human face, its plasticity and texture, as well as the connection of the face with psychological and symbolic translations. Here, the two different images (paused video stills of the women) are used for one portrait. The spatial challenges of the Art Station define the monumental dimension of the portraits.
